Research Motivation and Purpose
In recent years, extreme weather events have become more frequent due to climate change. Heavy rainfall can cause serious flooding in many cities within a short period of time. Although Yuanlin City is a convenient and comfortable place to live, it has also faced flooding problems in the past. This made me wonder: as cities continue to develop, how can we ensure both safety and environmental protection?
Through our teacher’s introduction, we learned about the Yuanlin Twin Retention Basins. At first, I thought a retention basin was simply a facility built to store rainwater and prevent floods. However, after visiting the site, I discovered that it is also a beautiful park with wetland plants, birds, and walking trails. It is not only an engineering structure but also a space where people can relax and connect with nature.
Therefore, we decided to choose the Yuanlin Twin Retention Basins as our research topic. We hope to understand how they function during heavy rain and how they contribute to ecological restoration and urban sustainability in daily life. Through this project, we want to show that flood control facilities are not just cold concrete structures, but important green spaces that protect and improve our city’s future.
