The Green Shield of Yuanlin — Exploring the Twin Detention Ponds

Yuanlin City once suffered frequently from flooding; however, the completion of the "Yuanlin Park" and "Longdeng Park" twin detention ponds has fundamentally transformed the urban landscape and safety. Our team centered this project on these infrastructures, launching an in-depth scientific and social investigation.

First, we conducted on-site interviews with facility personnel to uncover the flood prevention mechanisms hidden beneath the surface. We learned that these two parks are not merely recreational green spaces but sophisticated hydraulic engineering projects: Yuanlin Park utilizes a sunken lawn design for detention, while Longdeng Park integrates modern public art with massive underground storage chambers.

To understand public perception, we designed an online survey via Google Forms, collecting hundreds of responses. Our data analysis reveals that over 80% of residents are satisfied with the flood prevention functions, though some provided constructive feedback regarding maintenance details. By cross-referencing qualitative interviews with quantitative surveys, we identified the multifaceted value of these ponds in ecological education and urban beautification. This project is more than just a collection of data; it is a reflection of our thoughts and practices regarding sustainable urban governance.
